Worrying about my mum.

Good morning,

My mum went to the doctors on Monday as she had pain, bruising and an inverted nipple and lump in her right breast, the doctor also found a lump which was smaller in her left breast too.

My question to the nurses is 'what else could cause these symptoms other than cancer?'

She is 72yrs old,fit for her age and healthy. She has an appointment for a mammogram next Thursday.

I'm worried sick as I'm scared it might be IBC having googled the symptoms.

Thanks so much.xx

  • Hi TS0510 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your mum’s situation  and appreciate what an anxious time it must be for you.

Breast lumps and breast pain can  be caused by various factors, both benign and potentially cancerous. The most common causes are benign, such as fibroadenomas and cysts.

Sit tight and try to keep yourself as busy as you can until your mum has the results of her  mammogram.

Try to avoid googling anything until you have the facts about what this is, to prevent looking at information that may not be relevant to your mum’s situation.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

  • Thankyou Tina,it's more worrying because she has been booked in for a mammogram, ultrasound and something else, and she's so certain that it's cancer to the point she is already discussing chemo and losing her hair! I've reassured her that there's a higher chance is could be something else that's not sinister, but I'm not 100% confident either, but I try to keep her thinking positive and am hopeful for a positive outcome.

Thanks so much for your reply.

    Warm regards
