Raised CEA Level

Hi, I was diagnosed with  Colon Cancer last May and since had adjunctive chemotherapy which ended in September 24.  I am now on surverillance.  My worry is this -  My CEA level has risen from 3 in November to 32 as of yesterday.  I had a clear CT end of February - how worried should I be? Any thoughts gratefuly received. X

  • Hello GWalts and thanks for your post,

It is very difficult for me to comment on the rise in your CEA but I would talk it through with your oncologist. They may decide to do a different type of scan or repeat your blood test.

I can understand that it must be unsettling to hear that your blood test has risen since your last result but as we are not involved in your care it is really only your team who can give their opinion on whether you need any further investigations and what these will be.

If a cancer has come back the doctors would need other tests as well to confirm that this was the case.

If you have a bowel cancer nurse you could get in touch with them to see what your next steps should be.

I do hope that you know more soon.

If you would like to ring and chat things through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call. The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
