Hard growing immovable lump on right collarbone - worried about lymphoma

I’m not sure if I am being unnecessarily anxious or not. I would be grateful for some advice/reassurance?

I have a hard lump on my right clavicle: it’s not on the joint but a couple of inches along. It has grown slowly over the last three months. I first noticed it when looking in the mirror.

My GP referred me for an X-ray which showed no bone abnormality. My blood tests were all within normal range. GP then referred me for ultrasound.

Today I had the scan. The person who did it dismissed it on feeling it as being ‘your bone’. I explained that x ray had ruled out abnormality of the bone. He then checked the x ray and conceded that that there was no bone abnormality. He then scanned my collarbone and was there for some time. Eventually he stopped looking and said it is a ganglion cyst. I queried this because I’m a nurse and the ones I have felt are usually squishy and movable but this isn’t. The clinician said ‘I’m 99% certain it isn’t a tumour because it isn’t vascularised. He advised that if it grows or causes pain to go back to the GP.

I accepted this and left but his overconfidence left me a bit mistrustful of his clinical skills.

I am just wondering if ganglion cysts do occur on the collarbone and if they can be hard immovable and able to grow?

I am worried about malignancy because my we have a lot of cancer in our family on both sides (although neither of my siblings have suffered with it yet). I am also worried because I have been having really bad itching in my left hand which has woken me up at night. The itching on my finger is red now with little blister bumps. It started around the same time as the lump. I’m also having night sweats (but going through menopause).

I feel ill at ease with just accepting that it is what he said it is because of his overconfidence. Has anyone else had/know of ganglion cysts occurring on the clavicular region?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are worried about this lump in the clavicle region alongside some night sweats and itching on your hand. I appreciate how having had family members with cancer can be a worry but most cancers aren't inherited.

Whilst ganglion are more common on the joints of the wrist and fingers they can also appear in other places of the body including the feet and the clavicle. They are often firm and hard to the touch but can sometimes be spongy depending on the amount of fluid in the cyst.

It sounds like you have had the most appropriate tests to check this lump out for now including the x-ray and ultrasound. If anything unusual or concerning had been picked up needing further testing I am sure they would be arranging them for you. In terms of ruling out lymphoma you also have had blood tests which were within normal range which is reassuring.

If you remain concerned I would suggest going back and speaking with your GP. Do let them know about any other symptoms you are worried about so they can assess you properly.

I hope things settle down for you and you are able to get some peace of mind about all of this.

Please get back in touch if you need or want to and you are very welcome to call us if you prefer. Our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    All the best

  • Thank you Naomi. You’ve reassured me. I will visit GP if any changes but will try and forget about it for now. Appreciate your input.
