I'm sorry to read about your friend’s situation. This must be a difficult time for all involved.
Once cancer has spread from its primary site, then it is considered incurable. But many people can live with cancer for a number of years with the appropriate treatment.
In advanced cancer, chemotherapy might help someone to live longer and to live comfortably, even when they cannot be cured.
Right now, supporting your friend and taking care of yourself is important.
It can be very emotionally draining on someone who is trying to support someone who has cancer. You may find How to support someone with cancer useful to read.
The hospital where your friend is being treated may have a cancer information and support centre, sometimes these are run by the hospital or Macmillan Cancer Support. There may also be a Maggies centre where your friend, you, and the family can go to speak to someone and get some support.
