CIN 2

Hi I had a lletz procedure at the beginning of March and the results came back as cin 2 at the fringes of the biopsy so they held a mdt meeting on 11 April and I have spoken to the hospital today and been informed that they are going to leave it for 6 months when I have to have a another smear test is this normal???? As I can’t understand why they would leave cin 2 in place and let it grow for another 6 months anything you can tell me is appreciated

  • Hi Anyone-is-me, and thank you for your post.

I understand this is causing you to worry, I hope the following information can help to put your mind at ease.

It is important to know that CIN 2 is not cancer, but abnormal cells caused by the HPV infection. The development of cervical cancer from abnormal cells and HPV infection can take several years, if it occurs at all, so the probability of any changes taking place in the upcoming months is quite low.

The national screening programme is created from a government pathway, which has taken many years of research to put together. This page is from the government website shows flow charts that are used to determine decisions that are made. If you scroll down to flow chart 3, you will see that an abnormal result of CIN1 or CIN2 after treatment needs to be managed by a 6-month recall. This allows the body, after treatment, to continue to get on top of any remaining HPV that is present, which will then in turn stop changing cervix cells abnormal.

Approximately 18% OF CIN 2 cases may progress to CIN3, but in the majority of instances, the cells return to a normal state as HPV leaves the system. Unfortunately, we do not know of anything we can advise to help HPV leave quicker, but we do know that smoking can affect the strength of the immune system in fighting off viruses.

I can appreciate that having CIN 2 is unsettling, but bear in mind that cervical screening is about prevention, the idea is to pick up abnormal cells, assess them further (with colposcopy and biopsy) and then either monitor until they go back to normal or treat to prevent cancer from possibly developing in the future.

I hope this information is useful and that everything will be okay for you.
