Blood transfusion at home

I have just read a post on here but it is 4 years ago.
my husband with stage 4 metastatic Prostate Cancer recently received a very traumatic need for red blood cell transfusion at a hospital in a city centre 15 miles away, during the night.
when he needs another can it be done at home or at a local hospital?

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your husbands situation and that he had a traumatic time getting a blood transfusion.

Unfortunately because of a potential reaction to having a blood transfusion which may need prompt medical treatment this isn't usually done at home. This is something to discuss with your husbands team or GP as they know his situation. It might be possible to arrange any future transfusions to be done at his local community hospital.

I don't know if your husband also has support from the community palliative care team who specialise in symptom management such as pain, if so it might also be possible for your husband to have a blood transfusion at his local hospice depending if they provide this service.

I hope you can support with this soon. Please come back to us if you have any questions. If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma
