Anxious and wondering what is going on

Hi , just wondered if somebody could help me understand a bit more what is going on.

I went to the doctors a month or so ago when I was waking up in the night with chest pain which only occured on a night and never during the day. This turned into a bad cough that lasted about 3 weeks but has since completely cleared up. During this time I was sent for a chest X-ray which showed an abnormality so I was referred for a CT contrast scan. I got my results yesterday and was advised it shows enlarged lymph nodes in my left lung and they want to Investigate further. That's all they could tell me.

I'm not panicking thinking I have lung cancer , I'm a 35 year old father of one 4 year old and I'm panicking she is going to grow up without a dad and that's scaring me. I just wondered if the reason they want to investigate further is because they do in fact suspect it is cancer or if they are trying to just rule it out.

Since the tests and the cough etc I have felt absolutely fine in myself minus being very tired but I could attribute this to anxiety and worrying about this whole situation and a slightly sore throat down one side. No more cough and no more chest pain.

Am I overreacting or should someone who gets this kind of information maybe get things explained in a bit more depth ? As I suffer from bad health anxiety and now am scared I'm on my way out.

Any information would be great

  • Hi Ross 400 and thank you for your chat.

I can appreciate it is a stressful and worrying time not knowing the cause of the swollen lymph nodes.

While it’s possible that your symptoms are not related to cancer, the doctors will want further investigations to determine the cause of the swollen lymph nodes and to rule out cancer. I would find comfort in the fact that your cough has cleared up.

The most common causes of swollen lymph nodes can be caused by inflammation or infection.

People often experience a whole range of emotions when waiting for results. We know that talking can often relieve some of the distress and anxiety. There's some useful advice about talking therapies and how to access them on the NHS website. In the meantime,  Anxiety UK has a good website with helpful tips on how to deal with anxiety in these situations.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
