Atypical hyperplasia

Hi, I have just been diagnosed with atypical hyperplasia following a needle biopsy and followed up with a vacuum assisted biopsy. Does the cancer research uk/ NHS support taking low dose tamoxifen for this condition? I saw a baby Tam 01 study that suggested it could prevent future cancers approx 40% when dosing at 5mg?

  • Hello lobsters and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation,

The Tam01 trial you are referring to was done in Italy, which showed positive results for taken low dose Tamoxifen to prevent a recurrence of non invasive breast cancer.

Tamoxifen in the UK is not given as a standard treatment for atypical hyperplasia. The main treatment is vacuum assisted biopsy or surgery excision biopsy depending on the situation.

Cancer Research UK primarily funds cancer research and clinical trials. We are not involved in the process of approving treatments. Sometimes doctors can prescribe a drug for a purpose it is not licensed for. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) look at at the evidence of existing drugs being used in new ways and this guidance helps inform new ways of prescribing medicines.

However the study was small, and further studies may be needed. The best person to discuss this with would be your breast specialist as they are involved in your care and they might be able to confirm whether or not Tamoxifen is used for atypical hyperplasia in the UK.

I hope this reply is helpful. Please feel free to get back to us with any further questions,
