Return of vocal cords cancer

My husband was eventually diagnosed December 2022, RT for 7 weeks recovery went well until about 4 weeks ago he started with a cough and cold, his routine oncology app. Got cancelled until yesterday ( 21/2 months later than it should have been). We was informed yesterday that he will now be put back on the 2 week cancer pathway as they noticed a couple of changes around his vocal cords.  We are in shock and unsure what if any treatment he will be offered as they told us in 2022 that he could only have RT once and chemo is not possible as he had turned 70.  Can anybody offer and advice

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that this has happened to your husband, and I am sure this is a shock for you all. It is a lot to process.

It is difficult to say what treatment exactly your husband will be offered if his vocal cord cancer has returned, as we are not part of his team. However, I would expect his specialist to review him and discuss his case with other doctors to try and create a plan.

They will often look at someone's general health to decide whether treatments are suitable or appropriate, or if they are going to make the patient more unwell. This may or may not be why chemotherapy was not used before, but they may have other therapies they could try.

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is huge uncertainty for you both, which is difficult. I hope you have support.

If you want to talk anything through then do call our nurses on the helpline on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Take care,

    Sarah.
