Cervical Lump

I felt a lump on my cervix a few days ago, and rang the doctors surgery today to get an appointment for it to be looked at because I am worrying about it. They told me that it definitely needed to be seen, but that its not classed as urgent so the soonest appointment is in 3 weeks. I feel like this is a really long time for something that could potentially be cancer. Is this standard? Or can I ring up first thing tomorrow and ask for a same day appointment?

Any advice is appreciated!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you have a health worry.

Many people worry that their symptoms might mean a possible cancer diagnosis. But there can be other medical explanations for symptoms. But it needs to be checked out just to be sure.

It’s not unusual to wait a couple of weeks or more for a GP appointment. Some GP practices let you book appointments online. You could try ringing up first thing in the morning to see if you will get an appointment that day. But they may tell you what they told you when you booked the appointment originally, but there is certainly no harm in trying.

Some people worry that if they go on to be diagnosed with cancer it will spread while they are waiting to be seen. But we do know that most cancers grow slowly, so waiting a few weeks does not normally affect how well treatment works.  However, waiting any length of time when you are worried is stressful.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
