Metastasised breast cancer

I have just had my 6th injection of Denosumab and am in severe pain from Sciatica which is listed as a common side effect of this drug. My oncologist says i need it but i am very reluctant to take it as I need morphine t o kill the pain. Can you give me any advice re this please

Kind regards

  • Hello Margaret and thanks for posting.

Denosumab is given to help protect your bones from the effects of advanced breast cancer, especially if the cancer has spread to the bones. It can be very effective at reducing the risk of fractures and other bone problems.

As you are experiencing sciatica, which is very painful for you, it would be worth speaking to your oncologist again to see if they can adjust how often you are having Denosumab or if reducing the dose would help with the pain. You could also ask about switching to another bone strengthening drug to see it that improves things. Your quality of life is important, and I'm sure they would work with you to find a better balance between managing the cancer and maintaining your comfort.

If you have a breast specialist nurse involved in your care, then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this has been of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
