Toenail cancer concerns

Hello I've had discolouring in one of toe nails for a long time.  Doctor used a dermascopy and looks like fungus infection not concerned but clippings came back clear.  Been told discoloration.  Can you hsve that for years then? I have health anxiety so this has triggered it to be honest.  Its not my big toe but toe next to it.  Is toe nail cancer rare I'm very scared

  • Hello Bear3, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to learn that you have health anxiety. This must be very difficult.

Cancer under the toenail is rare. It is possible to have discolouration of the toenail for many years and it is good news that the toenail clippings came back clear and that no further tests are needed.

If the GP was concerned at all they would refer you to the hospital for further tests.

If you are still worried, do speak with your GP about your concerns and the anxiety this is causing you. As they know your situation, they may be able to help and give you more reassurance. In the meantime, there is information on the NHS website for people with health anxiety, with suggestions of ways to manage this, which I hope will be helpful.

    Take care,

    Jemma
