Support for someone diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

Hi there,

My Mum recently got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It’s a little overwhelming trying to find support for her so I thought I would start here. I am wondering if there is a service like counselling specifically to help people understand the process and get emotional support.

thanks,

Will

  • Hello Will and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's situation and I appreciate you wanting to get her the support that she needs.

Many people benefit from counselling. We do not provide this service as we are a research organisation. But if your mum would like to access counselling services it may be possible for her to receive NHS counselling, but how long the waiting list is will vary from area to area.

The British Association For Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) can provide private counselling. Their telephone number is 01455 883300. Email bacp@bacp.co.uk.

There are Maggie's Centres in certain parts of the UK that provide emotional support to people affected by cancer.  Many of their centres have trained psychologists who can provide one-to-one or group counselling.

There are often local charities that can also provide emotional and practical support. You can search what is available locally.

Some hospitals provide a counselling service for patients, and sometimes their families.  It may be possible for the cancer nurse specialist to refer your mum to their hospital service if they have one.

I hope this is of some help. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
