Abnormalities on cervix

Hi I’ve recently been to see my GP due to problems I’ve been having, bleeding after intercourse with my partner and a pink colour in my discharge.

The GP carried out two internal observations one with a speculum and the other to feel my womb and ovaries.

The womb and ovaries she said felt fine but my cervix she said that there are worrying changes and I needed to be referred on the two week suspected cancer pathway to be seen by a consultant.

Ive seen on my NHS GP app that she has referred me for an abnormal looking cervix  warty raised appearance with a small amount of crust what does this mean and why didn’t the GP tell me about this instead of just saying there are worrying changes? Can anyone help?

I have my first appointment to see the consultant on Saturday.

Many thanks.

  • Hi Zo3004 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your situation. I can imagine this is a worrying time for you.

I am sorry that your general practitioner did not provide more comprehensive information regarding the 'concerning changes' observed in your cervix. It is likely that the changes mentioned by your general practitioner are probably related to the warty and crusty appearance. Your GP has appropriately referred you to the hospital for further evaluation.

NHS England has implemented a new initiative known as the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) This standard stipulates that you should receive a diagnosis regarding the possibility of cancer within 28 days of your referral.

It is important to note that the majority of patients referred under the Faster Diagnosis Standard do not have cancer; however, they may be diagnosed with other conditions that require hospital assessment and treatment, such as Cervical Ectropion, Nabothian Cysts, or Genital Warts.

I can appreciate it is a stressful and worrying time waiting for hospital appointments.  Anxiety UK has a good website with helpful tips on how to deal with anxiety in these situations.

I hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards
