Stage 4 colorectal cancer with lung tumours

My husband has colorectal cancer which spread to the lung, stomach, spleen and 4 centimetres tumours on the liver.
We have tried three rounds of chemo and the cancer has doubled in size. I have heard about chemosaturation and chemo baths snd wondered whether anybody had tried these treatments. I’d be grateful for any information.

I feel our current treatment path is not working and we need to explore other possibilities. We have just delayed the next round of treatment because my husband was not strong enough and I’m looking for other possibilities to address the liver.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your husband's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both and I appreciate you wanting to explore options.

Chemosaturation or percutaneous hepatic perfusion ( PHP) as it is also known is a targeted treatment that delivers a high dose of chemotherapy directly to the liver, isolating the livers blood supply so that the chemotherapy goes straight to the cancer in the liver while limiting how much reaches the rest of the body. After the treatment, the blood leaving the liver is filtered to remove most of the chemotherapy before it is returned to the body.

Chemo baths or HIPEC (Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) is sometimes used when cancer has spread within the abdomen. After surgery, warm chemotherapy is circulated into the abdominal cavity to kill any remaining cancer cells. It isn’t typically used for lung or liver involvement.

These treatments are usually given at specialist centres. As nurses we can’t say if your husband is going to be suitable for any of these treatments as this needs to come from his specialist team who are familiar with all his medical details. If he has a specialist nurse involved in his care then perhaps they can offer you both further advice. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I see you are asking for other users’ experience. As these treatments are not standard treatments, I’m not sure if you will get many responses from other users sharing their experiences.

I hope this reply helps a little. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
