Husband just diagnosed with prostate cancer

My husband has recently been diagnosed with prostrate cancer. The consultant has said the prostrate cannot be removed, is this due to his age, 68? He is a fit man, not overweight and still working. They have gone for hormone therapy by injection once a month to be followed by radiotherapy. Is this a good and positive option?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis, this must be a difficult time for you both.

Treatment decisions are based on the type and stage (size and extent) of a cancer alongside the patients general health and fitness levels.

The overall outcomes for both surgery to remove the prostate and radiotherapy of the prostate to treat prostate cancer are very similar. Therefore it isn't unusual for men to be offered the choice of either surgery or radiotherapy for prostate cancer, there are instances however where one treatment is deemed more suitable for a particular patient.

Do ask the specialist doctor or nurse involved why surgery isn't an option for your husband as well as asking what they hope the treatment will achieve. This should give you a better understand of the situation and what to expect.

The team looking after your husband will be aiming to give the treatment for the best possible outcome for him.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you need to. You are also welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
