Peripheral Neuropathy

I've just completed a week after my first Chemo and have been wrecked with pain over the whole of my body.It is just beginning to subside now.My own research brings me to the conclusion that I have the above side effect. Will eventually go away? and will I get it after every treatment.?

your advice would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards.

  • Hello Dylmaddie and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the pain that you have been experiencing.

It is difficult to give an opinion without being involved in your care and also not knowing the cancer and type of chemotherapy that you have been receiving.

We do have a page on our website about peripheral neuropathy which you might find helpful to look at.

Peripheral neuropathy normally affects the hands and feet. It is important that you report any side effects to your team at the hospital as if the side effects are very painful they may decide to reduce or change the drugs depending on the regime you are on.

If you are diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in most cases this does go away after treatment has stopped. If it is diagnosed then the doctors will want to monitor it quite closely to make sure that it does not get any worse.

When you go back for your second course of treatment I am sure the nurses and doctors will want to discuss any side effects that you have experienced from your first course of treatment. You may find it helpful to make a note of the different symptoms that you have experienced and how long they lasted so you have an accurate record for the team.

I hope this is helpful. Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through. the helpline nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm and the number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • Thak you Cathrine I have a consultation  later today and I will certainly mention all the side affects I have experience.
