Post menopausal bleeding

Hi my wife had post menopausal bleeding last year and underwent a hysteroscopy and a biopsy was taken, thankfully all was ok and womb size was 4.4mm. This was in November 2024. She has now bleed again and has been re referred on the 2 week wait. Is this normal practice as I’m worried something has happened in the last 4 months. Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening with your wife.

Post menopausal bleeding can have a range of different causes and most won't be linked to cancer but the important thing it is taken seriously and needs to be properly investigated. Being re-referred on the two week pathway is normal practice whenever there is post-menopausal bleeding, even if someone has already been checked out before and everything was fine.

The majority of people who are referred on this pathway do not have cancer. It just means that the doctors want to be thorough and not delay anything if further tests are needed.

There is information on the NHS website about post menopausal bleeding that you may find useful.

I know it's easier said than done but try and take it one step at a time until you both know more. Some people find talking it through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
