Pre radiotherapy food & drink regime for prostate cancer

Hi, we were at the planning meeting yesterday for the start of a radiotherapy journey for my husband.  He has to start the food regime today and although we have a list of some stuff we have loads of questions.

can he have rice cakes & oat cakes

What can he eat as snacks other than fruit

is caffeine free tea ok with oat or rice milk

is there anywhere we can find some meal suggestions as we feel limited on ideas and we need to follow this for 14 weeks.

Any ideas and advise greatly appreciated we are desperate to get this right for the best treatment outcome.

  • Hi seagram and thanks for posting

Advice about diet and nutrition prior to radiotherapy of the prostate can vary from hospital departments and from patient to patient and it is best to be guided by husbands specialist team.

If your husband has a specialist nurse do contact them to ask them for further information about this.

Generally speaking patients are advised to eat as healthy and balanced diet as possible, which we have information about diet and prostate cancer on the website. However most radiotherapy centres will want to minimise the amount of gas in the pelvic region. It is best to avoid all fizzy drinks and foods that produce wind such as green leafy vegetables and other food your husband knows causing him to have more gas in the gut. The radiotherapy team will also want your husband to try and maintain the same weight and shape throughout treatment.

It is important that your husband continues to eat fibre and rice and oat cakes should be fine for him to have. Ensure he is drinking plenty of fluids including plenty of water. De caffeinated tea and coffee is preferred and dairy alternative milks should also be fine to have.

There is also a cancer and nutrition helpline manned by dieticians run by the world cancer research fund that you may wish to contact.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you have further questions.

    All the best

    Naomi
