Elape procedure

Hi my Mum had anal cancer in 2023 which she had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy for and was all clear after. At the end of last year she found out it has returned in the same place. My mum will be in 80 in September, she has been offered an Elape procedure which she is unsure about as it is a major op with side effects and long recovery. She could have palliative chemo or no treatment and still how things go. I’m just wondering if you have any information or advise about this type of surgery in an older person. My Mum is still very independent but she struggles with walking too far and gets very tired. It’s such a difficult decision for her to make so any information you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thsnks

  • Hello, and thank you for contacting us.

It is incredibly difficult for nurses to be able to give you a medical opinion on the suitability of your mum for this operation, but I can understand you wanting to know more.

What we can say is that from the research read, in general, that this is an operation with good outcomes for a majority of people, but I am unsure of this for someone of mum's age and abilities. This medical article from 2022 talks through long-term outcomes after this surgery, but it is not in the older population.

There is also more discussion on this surgery on the Macmillan Bowel forum.

Only you and Mum together will know if this surgery, the recovery, those follow-up hospital visits, and then living with a stoma are things that she feels she can cope with or wants in her life.

Quality of life is just as important as quantity, and the doctors involved will understand this too, so do discuss this further with them.

Take care, and I hope you get the information you need. If you want to talk things through with the nurses on the helpline the number to call is 0808 800 4040, lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
