Thickened endometrial lining

I have passed out from pain a few times recently. The second time I was seen at A&E they did scans. They suspected a ruptured ovarian cyst as I have had this before and have suspected PCPS. They couldn’t see anything on the ovaries but found a large fibroid and thickened endometrial lining (21mm). I have been given a standard referral to gynaecology- not a 2 week pathway. I have received the referral and it is showing as 17 weeks which is really worrying me after having done some reading about measurements and likely prognosis. Should I be pushing to be seen more quickly? I am pre-menopausal and so I don’t take any HRT. Periods fairly heavy but a regular cycle. Big issues with bladder leakage and trouble passing water and have suffered with severe constipation for the last couple of years. I am 46 and have had three children. I am not overweight. Any advice or words of wisdom appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you're worried since your trip to A and E. I'm sure that was frightening for you, passing out and having these pains.

Fibroids are common, and women often do not even know they have them. If they are causing problems, they can easily be removed.

A thick womb lining does not necessarily mean you have cancer; it is more commonly endometrial hyperplasia, particularly in pre menopausal women.

If the doctors who reviewed you in the hospital had been concerned about cancer, an urgent referral would have been made, but I appreciate that the waiting and then further research online can bring up questions. It may be that the doctors decide to rescan and biopsy the endometrial lining and then, if still concerned about the thickness, suggest it is treated by inserting a coil.

The problems you are experiencing with severe constipation, which can cause difficulty passing urine, would be good to talk through with your GP.

If you remain concerned about the standard gynaecological referral, then discuss this too. If they feel it is needed, the doctor can change to a more urgent referral.

Take care, and if you want to talk anything through then call the nurses on 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
