Hysteroscopy and Polypectomy

I’m 55 and was having periods as normal until 6 months ago. I then had a 4-month break and thought I was finally going through the menopause. But then the floodgates opened and I had a 10 day period where o had to change every hour. After 4 days it went lighter for a day and then cane back heavy again for the following 5 days. Nothing again for 9 weeks when the GP asked for a routine blood test as I hadn’t had a blood test in years. I waited 4 weeks for the blood test appointment and then my GP phoned me and said my iron was extremely low and was I loosing lots of blood from anywhere. I said no but I had not long ago had a really heavy period. She ordered a pelvic scan. The hospital phoned next day with a cancellation so I went and they did a transvaginal scan. The radiographer said I’ve got a cyst in my left ovary but she wasn’t worried as I must have just ovulated. She said there’s a slight thickening of the uterine lining and she would send the scan to gynae and they would check it and probably call me back in 1 year to check it.

Next morning my GP phoned and said there’s was an urgent message on her desk when she got in saying I needed an urgent Hysteroscopy as my uterine lining was measuring 27mm. I went next day and had  Hysteroscopy with local anaesthetic and the nurse called a doctor in and I could hear them whispering to each other and hear the words ‘a sus area’. The doctor swapped the probe and asked if she could remove a couple of polyps that were ‘hiding in the thickened area’. Again under local anaesthetic they removed them and did biopsies. The dr said afterwards she’ll phone me in 10 days with the results but she felt there wasn’t anything to worry about in her experience.

Since then I’ve had a very dark brown discharge but no bleeding and I feel really tired and shaky. I still don’t know if I’ve actually gone through the menopause or not as the last bleed 7 months ago could have been the polyps bleeding and not a period so I just don’t know. Also, if the dr said she doesn’t think there’s anything to worry about after removing 2 polyps and biopsies is she trying to keep me calm or can they actually tell from looking at the samples that they don’t ‘look’ cancerous? It’s all happened so fast I feel confused.

  • Hello, and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate that having tests and waiting for test results can be a stressful and anxious time.

I am not surprised you are feeling shaky and tired, especially with your low iron and with everything you have been through.

When the doctors do the hysteroscopy, through their experience, they may have a good idea of whether what they are looking at is cancer and may say so at the time. However, it is not until the samples that were removed during the procedure are closely looked at that a diagnosis of whether or not it is cancer can be confirmed.

I can understand you trying to look for answers whilst you are waiting, but until the results are known, no one can tell you, and being in 'limbo' like this is difficult.

I hope you do not have to wait too long for your results and that everything is OK. In the meantime, if you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday, and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040

    Take care,

    Jemma
