Lumpy Breasts

Hello all!

I recently went to the breast clinic for a left breast lump and was told it’s a fibroadenoma. They did an ultrasound of my left breast following a breast exam and told me I also have a few benign cysts. This was two weeks ago

I’m a very anxious person and am worried. Before going to the breast clinic, I self examined and my breast tissue felt firmer than the other side but the Dr wasn’t concerned. Now, it feels more prominently firm. I’m just looking for some reassurance that everything is okay really!

When I went to the breast clinic I was due on my period. Do breasts shrink at this point in my cycle so is that why the breast tissue feels different? Could the cysts be making the tissue feel different?

  • Hello hroann and thanks for your post,

Breasts change throughout a woman's life due to hormonal changes and can feel quite lumpy just before a period. You need to be reassured that you have been checked by doctors who examine breasts on a regular basis and know whether there is anything that they need to be concerned about.

Breast cysts and fibroadenomas are common particularly in young women. You can read more about benign breast conditions

    on Breast Cancer Now's website.

If you remain concerned do go and chat this through with your GP and hopefully they will be able to also reassure you.

    All the best,

    Catherine
