Extreme pain and no bowel movements after having kidney removed last Thursday. Please help

My mum had kidney removed on Thursday and it's now Tuesday,  she had bad pain at the front right hand side of her tummy, this pain is just getting worse and worse, we have requested a GP to come out and see mum to check her over. Mum is moving about  as ofter as possible and Trying to sleep propped up, but she just can't lay propped or any position due to the pain, we are worried as she hasn't had a bowel movement since the operation and is taking laxatives and morphine, what should we do , Thank-you.

  • Hello Weezer28 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your mum. Hopefully her GP will be able to advise your mum about the necessary medication to help her constipation and her continuous pain. The constipation may also be contributing to the discomfort she is feeling. She may need a couple of suppositories to help initially and then hopefully when she is more mobile and she is eating normally this will improve.

The GP may also be able to prescribe some pain killers that do not cause so much constipation.

It is important that your mum is drinking regularly and trying to take short walks.

Trying to increase fibre in the diet may help.

The NHS has produced some information on tips to help constipation

We have some information on our website about recovery after surgery

I do hope some of these links may be helpful. Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through. the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,
