Malignant mucosal melanoma

My mum has terminal malignant mucosal melanoma diagnosed at stage 4. It's stage 5 now and she is under palliative care. Do you have anyone on the team who has seen this and can advise how this might now play out? Google only mentions spread but whilst the tumour is aggressive and growing fast it is not spreading elsewhere. No one involved in her care has ever seen this before.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for you all.

Unfortunately because mucosal melanoma is extremely rare not many people will have come across it. I'm afraid none of the nurses here have nursed patients with this. Even if we had I am sure like with every cancer we wouldn't be able to say what the future may look like for your mum.

It may be worth asking her specialist team if there is anyone else who your mum could speak to give her a better understanding about this. Sometimes patients are given a second opinion or go to see a specialist at a different hospital who may have a specialist interest in rarer type cancers. This may be worth asking about.

I am sorry we can't be of more help on this occasion but if you would like to speak with us do call us on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  •  We are in the same situation here as none of the nurses involved in her care have ever seen it, we are no longer under a consultant / specialist as she is now just palliative - just the GP and the palliative nurse team. Thank you for your reply though.

  • Hi Maidmarian,

I'm so sorry to hear that your mum has this rare disease and you are finding it difficult to get advice. I will send you a friend request. If you accept it I can give you information about two organisations that may be able to help advise you. One is a melanoma charity and the other is an online support group for mucosal melanoma patients & their family.

    Best wishes to you both,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
