Are the permission forms patients sign on concentric generalised or personal? For example on my form is stated “The purpose is to stage cancer” do I have it?

Why are we doing it?

The purpose of this procedure is for staging of a gastrointestinal cancer to support appropriate treatment selection and to evaluate an abnormality of the pancreas and/or biliary system.

is this specific to me?

Do I already have cancer and they are grading it, or are they looking for cancer?

im sure this sounds silly but I am naturally confused and concerned.

the procedure was done on the 22nd January 2025. I sadly missed a follow up appointment. The next appointment was scheduled for the 11th of February, which was cancelled an hour before I was due to arrive. I now cannot get an nhs appointment till 6th May!

many thanks

James

  • Dear James,

    Thank you for your email.

I am sorry to hear about your confusion particularly as you have not been given a diagnosis.

As your appointment is not until May it might be a good idea to see if you can speak to the Consultant's secretary to see if you can find out more. If you have been diagnosed with a cancer this is normally discussed at a formal meeting where all the doctors meet to talk about your case. This is maybe what they wanted to discuss with you in February.

Hopefully the secretary may be able to arrange an earlier appointment if there is a chance that you have been diagnosed with cancer.

Your GP may well have more information about the results from your procedure so you could make an appointment with them.

You could also get in touch with Pals (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) and ask them to find out more on your behalf.

If you would like to speak to one of the helpline nurses then do give us a ring .The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
