Two week referral

I have an appointment to see a consultant. I have been advised that they may examine me but no investigation will be done on this day. Obviously I am really worried and it feels like is prolonging everything. I was under the impression a two week wait meant you would have an investigation. What exactly will the appointment be about.

  • Hi Mzt,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You have done the right thing by getting your breasts investigated. Most clinics do examine and discuss your symptoms with you on, your first visit. They then proceed with ultrasound and biopsy, if necessary. There is then about a two week wait for the results. If your consultant feels that a CT scan or MRI is needed, you will usually get an appointment through quite quickly. Clinics vary throughout the country. Some now offer a one-stop shop, but others don't have all the facilities to hand, or have an undue pressure on the number of patients needing to be tested, putting more strain on the facilities available.

Not all lumps are cancerous - only about 20% of all patients, who attend the clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. Even if it does turn out to be cancer, the outcome doesn't have to be doom and gloom any longer. Treatments have come a long way in recent years. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, within a year of each other. My diagnosis was 15 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello Mzt-worried and thanks for your post,

Often a specialist likes to talk through symptoms first before deciding the most appropriate tests. The doctor will then have a chance to explain the type of tests(if they are needed) that they may do and why they are doing them. As I am not involved in your care it is difficult to say more.

We have more information about what may happen at your appointment.

Do keep an open mind. Go through any concerns that you have and if you don't understand the doctors explanation ask them to explain again. It can sometimes help to take a close friend or member of the family so you have someone else listening to what the doctor says.

A lot of urgent referrals don't end up with a cancer diagnosis. I do hope everything goes well and if you would like to ring and chat this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open 9-5 Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Catherine.
