3 weeks post total thyroidectomy recovery

Hi I am 3 weeks today post op after total thyroidtectomy for papillary carcinoma in left side and I am still experiencing swelling above the incision in the place where the thyroid would have been. I had this from the start but its still quite hard and noticeable but not quite as numb. I also have soreness and pulling sensation when swallowing deeply or food and voice hoarseness, interestingly if I put my chin down to swallow it doesn't hurt as much!  Also I am having to talk quietly and not project my voice.

The discomfort is around incision site above it towards Adams apple and below into collar bones. Scar is healing well and had no issues with it at all but had a lot bruising did come out in the first week.

I do not have an appointment until 6th May for follow up which will be 8 weeks after surgery, and have not been able to get to speak to my surgeon or any nursers to check if this is all normal and expected.

If it is all normal am I wondering if there's anything I can do to help the discomfort.   ie is using ice or anti inflammations or massage or is it just a matter of time for it all to heal?

Thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting. I'm sorry to read about your situation.

The symptoms you describe are actually quite common in the first few weeks of having a total thyroidectomy. The swelling and firmness above the scar is often due to internal healing and scar tissue forming where the thyroid used to sit. It can feel quite full or tight especially when swallowing or moving your neck. The hoarseness and discomfort when speaking or projecting your voice might be from irritation or bruising to the nerves around your vocal cords during surgery. It can take several weeks for your voice to improve. The discomfort in your collarbone is not unusual. The muscles and tissues tend to get moved around a bit during surgery and this can cause discomfort.

Taking painkillers such as paracetamol or Ibuprofen should help manage the pain. Light massage around the scar once the incision is fully healed can help soften tight tissue. Use a gentle moisturiser or something like vitamin E oil and gently rub in small circles avoiding pressing deeply.

If you feel that your symptoms are getting worse then do speak to your GP or the hospital team. If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care, then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for your reply and reassurance. I think because I didn’t feel as bad as this immediately after surgery I was surprised and a bit disappointed that I felt like I had gone back a step. But fully understand the reasons why I would have all these symptoms after surgery. Thanks again
