WLE results and who gives them to you?

Hi, I had a WLE for Melanoma Pt1a on 26/2  and a few days after the op received a letter saying a phone appointment had been made for me early in April for post op consultation but that they will contact me if face to face appointment is required. I’ve now received a letter saying a face to face appointment has been made in May for me with Plastic surgeon Nurse. I’m wondering does the Plastic Surgeon team give you the results about whether you need further treatment IE: the margins weren’t clear or is this just to check the scar?

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your situation.

From what you've written it sounds like the appointment with the plastic surgery nurse is most likely checking on your scar and how it is healing. The plastic surgery team are usually involved after a wide local excision ( WLE) to monitor the wound, make sure it's healing well and to discuss any issues related to the appearance or tightening of the scar.

If the margins weren't clear or if further treatment was needed, you would be contacted by the dermatology ( skin cancer) team. The post operative phone call next month might be when they discuss the results from the excision and to let you know if all the melanoma has been removed.

Just to be sure, you may want to ring the hospital and ask them to clarify this for you.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
