Is stage 1a cervical cancer ever just 1a?

Been diagnosed with 1a cervical cancer, first 1a1 but after more tests due to fuzzy margins, upgraded to 1a2. Now waiting mri. I've been back and forth with it in my head, trying to stay calm and think its early, its better to confirm that it's not spread than just leave it etc, but everywhere I read/post I seem to find that people say they were staged 1a until more tests then it was upgraded to 3 or 4 and now I'm absolutely petrified. Is this normal, that so many people go with it undiagnosed for so long? I've had no symptoms, no irregular bleeding, they said they had removed all the cancer with the loop, but there were still cell changes with fuzzy margins. I dont understand if they still think they got it all and reordering tests just showed it was bigger than originally thought or it's because the margins of changed cells are fuzzy. I'm trying to stay positive but everything I read/get told is 'i started like you, now I've got stage 4'!

  • Hello, badgerbadger, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation. This must be a difficult time.

When the area of cancer has been removed, the doctors will also remove a clear margin to ensure that no tiny cells have been left behind. The doctors must know the exact stage (how far it has spread) of the cancer so they know what the best treatment is. An MRI scan will give more information for the doctors to make sure there is no further cancer.

I can appreciate that you are worried with all the different posts you have read, but it is important to know that this does not mean this is your situation. Until the doctors have all the information they need, unfortunately, no one can say.

Waiting for tests and test results can be stressful and anxious time, but I hope you can get more answers soon.

Do come back to us if you have further questions. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Take care,

    Jemma

  • Thank you for replying. When they said in my letter the depth of invasion is at least 4mm and at the margins, does that mean the cancer or the precancerous cells? At my first appt after the leep the nurse told me they took cin 3 cells and in the middle they found a small amount of cancerous cells when looked at under the microscope but the cancer was removed. The doctors letter is unclear to me whether the invasion means cancerous cells or includes precancerous ones too.

  • Hello, and thank you for coming back to us.

I can understand that you would want to feel clearer about what the letter exactly means. Unfortunately, we are not going to be unable to answer your question.

It would be the team dealing with you who would be able to provide that level of detail so that you get the information that is specific to you.

Do ask the doctors or the colposcopy team so that you get the correct response.

Take care, and I hope this is clearer soon.

    Sarah.
