When to ask for biopsy

I have lichen sclerosus & it is being managed by a fantastic specialist. But in recent months the symptoms have worsened so much I'm wondering if it has developed into vulval cancer or pre-cancerous VIN.

Can I press my Specialist to do a biopsy or are they likely to turn that down?- she did one when first seeing me but that was years ago.

  • Hello, and thanks for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. I would get in touch with your consultant and let them know about your concerns and that you feel that your symptoms have got worse. They may want to move your appointment to an earlier date (if you have one)so they can assess the area. If it is difficult to see your consultant, then make an appointment with your GP so they can give their opinion, and they can then advise you about what you should do next.

The NHS has produced some information on lichen sclerosus, which you may find helpful to look at.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine
