ovarian cancer treatment options

Hello all,

I have recently been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, Stage 1C, Grade 1.

I had my surgery about 3 weeks ago, both ovaries, womb, ovarian tubes and appendix were removed. The Gyne Surgeons suggested I should have another surgery to search if the cancer has spread to lymph nodes and fatty tissue (apron). At the time of the surgery frozen biopsy was done and the results was borderline. However, the detailed biopsy found microscopic cancer. We were told the cysts were burst at the time of the surgery (or had already burst prior to surgery).

My oncologist suggested I could leave it as it is and have regular reviews (every 3 months), or have chemo or have the surgery and have chemo accordingly.

I am very confused, any suggestion/support will be appreciated.

Thank you

Sebnem

  • Hello Sebnem, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry to learn of your situation. This must be a difficult time for you.

I wondered if you have a specialist nurse (CNS) who knows your situation and who you could speak with. Or if it is possible to speak with the oncologist again.

Often, when you are given a choice of treatment, it is because there is no wrong answer and will often come down to the patient's choice.

For some people, it can be helpful to write a list of the benefits and risks of each treatment option given and to talk things through with friends and relatives.

If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

I hope this reply helps in some way.

    Take care,

    Jemma

  • Hi, I was diagnosed with exactly the same as you in August last year. My cyst was very large 26cm so I had to have debulking surgery.  I had already had a full hysterectomy some years ago so no need for them to remove anything in that area but because it was so large they had to go in via the abdomen. The tumour split and spilt during surgery so they recommended I had chemotherapy. On Tuesday this week I had the last of the 6 cycles so just coming out the other end now. I was going to have a combined chemo treatment I but had an allergic reaction to the main drug (Pacitaxel j to the main chemo drug so they recommended I just had the one type Carbuplatin. I had breast cancer 10 yrs ago and had a Taxel based chemo drug fir that and reacted to that too so they have now decided I an allergic to any drug connected to the yew tree on which they are derived. This is personal to me and is very unlikely to be the case with others. Like you, they are goi g to now closely monitor me provided of course that the scan I’m having in a couple of weeks says it’s all gone.

i understand you are probably anxious but I’m 76 and this is my third run in with cancer as I had colon cancer and surgery in 1986 before the days of chemotherapy for that type of cancer.im still here and looking forward to getting back to normal life in a few weeks time. The treatment isn’t great but they’ve made great strides over the years and it’s a lot better than it was, for instance I’ve not been sick and not gone bald this time round. If you take their advice and just prepare to be out of sorts for a while you should come through it ok. Stage 1c is still an early stage so caught at a time when the outcome looks positive.

  • Good, I’m pleased. Everyone is so lovely too, they really make you feel cared about and my experience in the chemo room is there are as many laughs as worries.

  • Thats what people dont understand you can feel rough but alot of times you have a laugh x

  • Is there a well being centre where you are. I’ve not used our flash new one but hear really good things about it. Might be worth just going along for coffee, crafting, chatting etc. I bet lots of laughs too. You can just walk in all day at ours. I’m an artist and get absorbed in creating plus have lots of supportive people around. I hope you have the same.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about everything you've been through. It sounds like it's been an incredibly tough journey, both physically and emotionally.

Moving forward after cancer treatment is a journey and it can feel uncertain and overwhelming at times. Many people live with the worry about the cancer coming back and this is a very natural thought process to go through. But for some people this fear and anxiety is with them every day and it really can affect their quality of life. Maggie's has some information about this on their website.

We have information on our website about life beyond cancer that you may find useful.

Some patients also find moving forward groups and courses run within cancer support centres such as Macmillan or Maggie's centres helpful to look forward and try and regain a sense of normality.  Macmillan and other cancer support centres attached to hospitals run these types of courses as well.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
