Cognitive impairment

My mother has NETS diagnosed in December at stage 4. Prognosis 4-6 months.

Why does she have cognitive impairment,  but not all the time, seems to come in waves? Will be lucid and "all there" one day, then like today,  talking not making sense,  getting words and sentences wrong way round? Confused and gets emotional because of this?

  • Hi Smolden and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your mum’s situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for all the family.

I cannot say exactly why your mum has intermittent cognitive impairment. Only her hospital team may be able to provide answers.

This is because they are familiar with all her medical details and will know so much more about her individual situation.

Some reasons for cognitive impairment may be related to any treatment she is receiving. For example, some types of pain relief can cause drowsiness and confusion. If the cancer has spread to her brain or liver, then this may also be another reason for her cognitive impairment. Or, sometimes, just the general deterioration of the body's normal functioning can cause changes in how 'with it' people are.

Right now, supporting her and taking care of yourself is important. It can also be very emotionally draining on someone who is trying to support someone with cancer.

People who are deemed palliative are usually referred to the palliative care team or local hospice. This team can provide physical, emotional, and psychological support for your mum, you, and other family members.

If your mum has not been referred to the palliative team, it would be worth speaking with her GP to see if she could be referred to the community palliative care team and other community services. which could be beneficial for your mum.

I hope this helps a little, and the links are useful.
