Urgent cancer referral

I was referred yesterday for an 2ww urgent cancer appointment for breast screening. I received my appointment today and it's for 24th April! Is there anything I can about getting this sooner? As I should be seen within 2 weeks. I've called the clinic and they've said there's just such a backlog

Thanks

  • Hello Jrt37 and thank you for posting,

Waiting for a clinic appointment and having tests can be a stressful and anxious time.

You can read about cancer waiting times on our website. Unfortunately, with the pressures on the NHS, we are hearing that people are having to wait longer for their appointments.

If you can get to the hospital on short notice, you could ask if there is a cancellation if you could be considered for an earlier appointment.

Otherwise, the only way to get an earlier appointment might be to have a private appointment.

It is important to know that to get a cancer diagnosis, there is time to get tests and all the information that is needed to make a diagnosis and if cancer is found, waiting a couple of weeks longer is unlikely to affect the outcome for any treatment. However, I can appreciate that this is a worrying time for you.

Please do come back to us if you have any questions. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline you would be welcome to give us a call. We are available Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

    Jemma
