Ascites build up

I have just been drained yesterday took 3.2 litres but my stomach has swollen almost immediately I was in immense pain last night unable to control it with paracetamol or codine eventually pain subsided after sickness at 6am . I have attempted to eat a small amount of food today but feel sick now 2 hours since eating . I’m asking why the build up is so quick ? I have stage 4 ovarian cancer and I am currently on chemotherapy which is not budging the ascites

thanks Marsha

  • Hi Marsha,

I just wanted to let you know that our nurses are not online over the weekend but they will respond to your post in the next few days. In the meantime, I would perhaps ring 111 and seek medical advice on this. You had a really difficult night last night and experienced sickness and are feeling sick again shortly after eating so I think it would be a good idea to talk to a doctor about it or ring your medical team if there is a number they have given you at the hospital after they did the draining yesterday. If you feel really unwell and feel you need urgent medical attention, don't hesitate to ring 999.

I hope you manage to speak to someone very soon and that your symptoms improve.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Marsha and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, this must be a difficult time.

Ascites can build up again after it has been drained but normally it would develop over a few weeks or possibly a few days.

It is difficult to know whether the swelling you have noticed is a build-up of fluid again. Do let your team at the hospital know what you have experienced, they know your situation and may be able to advise you further. Hopefully, you have a specialist nurse (CNS) who you can contact. You may need to leave a message but they should get back to you as soon as possible.

If you are unable to contact your team at the hospital it might be worth speaking with your GP especially if you are still having lots of pain, as they may be able to help with this. Or if you are still unable to get help you could call NHS 111 for advice.

I hope you can get some answers soon and the symptoms start to settle soon.

If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040,

    Take care,

    Jemma
