Lumpectomy and a broken leg

I am due to have a lumpectomy very soon. I sustained a broken fibula 2 weeks ago, now have a cast and unable to walk independently, or get out of the house. I live in the living room. I am booked in for day surgery and have concerns. I am dependent on my partner to move me although I can use a frame for about 5 metres. I can't get up from my sofa/bed without my frame/commode. Every appointment I have to book an ambulance too. I am worried that my partner will find the extra care needed for me immediately after surgery will be very difficult for a 74 year old.

  • The hospital should not discharge you until you can be safely discharged - this is not only about your health but about what help you may need from carers and about what equipment you need.  This may be paid for privately or via the NHS or Social Care.  Anyway, the hospital will be able to advise you.  Hope all goes well.

  • I should say I'm not actually a nurse but used to work in social care so thought my input might be useful!

  • Hi there Jolanda and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about you needing a lumpectomy and your recent injury and how this has affected you.

We would suggest you speak with the breast unit about your concerns about how you and your partner will manage at home post surgery.

The hospital team may be able to sort you out with some additional aids or equipment to help you both alongside other community care and support. So do talk this through with your healthcare team when you can to make sure you get the help you need at this time.

Please get back in touch if you need to.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thank you for your advice. I was told today the lumpectomy is cancelled because the bone scan has shown cancerous cells in my spine. Treatment yet to be decided.  So the initial problem has gone. No idea what happens now as I wait for  the oncologist to contact me.

Thank you again for your advice.

    Jolanda

  • Hi Jolanda and thanks for getting back in touch

I am sorry to hear about your change in situation and this can't have been easy news to hear. I hope you know more about the next steps soon.

You know where we are if you need to get back in touch with us or talk things through.

    Take care

    Naomi
