Stage 3 Breast - 86 year old

My gran was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 3.
currently awaiting CT scan to check if it has spread anywhere else

she was given hormone therapy to start and has been advised if it has spread anywhere else it would be classed as stage 4. She didn’t take anything in today at all at the appointment and I think is in denial a bit.

I want to keep her in a positive mind set as much as I can and didn’t want to ask the consultant outright infront of her but can she live with this? Is stage 3 ever curable? I’m heartbroken for her and feel I don’t have all the answers.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your Gran and appreciate what an upsetting time this must be for all the family.

there is information about supporting someone with cancer on our website that may be helpful to read.

Unfortunately as no one here is involved in her care we can't say how this diagnosis will affect her or her life expectancy.

It sounds like the doctors are trying to find out the extent of her cancer at the moment which hopefully will give a better idea about what the short and longer term may look like.

Later stage cancers can't usually be cured but rather controlled alongside any symptoms patients experience managed. Alongside the hormone therapy we can't say what other treatment may be possible or how this may help her but do ask the doctor more questions about what all this means when you get the chance.

If your gran gives her permission you could ask to speak with her doctor alone so you can ask more difficult questions that you wouldn't want to ask in front of her.

I hope you know more soon but do get back if you need to. Our helpline is open week days 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer to talk over the phone.

    Take care

    Naomi
