Ovarian cancer - mum has stomach drained 6 days a week, but now she has fluid leaking from her legs. Is this a sign the cancer is progressing?

Hi

My lovely Mum has ovarian cancer and has had a pleurx drain fitted since April 2024. She is 80 and is still at home but she does have her stomach drained 6 days a week. She amazes me with her strength but obviously awful to see her with not much quality of life. Last week she suddenly started to have fluid leaking from her legs as they are quite swollen and is unable to take water tablets. These are now dressed daily. Can I ask if this is another stage of the cancer progressing ? I don’t like to ask the district nurses as Mum is always present. Thank you Sarah

  • Hi Sarah and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn of your mum’s situation. I can imagine this is a worrying time for you both.

There may be various factors   contributing to the fluid accumulation in your mother's legs (oedema).

The fact that your mum has ovarian cancer could be the reason she has developed peripheral oedema. This can lead to swelling in the legs and feet. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the cancer is progressing. Only her general practitioner or a hospital specialist can accurately determine the underlying cause.

Are you able to contact her GP or hospital specialist and seek their advice.

You do not say whether your mum is still having active treatment.

Active treatment is not always the best option for every patient. For those who are not undergoing treatment, palliative care is often offered. In some cases, managing symptoms to ensure a good quality of life is the most appropriate approach.

People who are receiving palliative care are usually referred to the palliative care team or local hospice.

The Palliative care team can provide physical, emotional, and psychological support for your mum, you, and other family members.

You can ask for her to be referred to her local community palliative care nurses who are experts at managing symptoms as well as providing emotional support.

Right now, supporting your mum and taking care of yourself  is important.

I hope this helps a little and the link above is useful.
