Mum's oesophageal cancer operation 'has failed' - what does this mean?

My mum had an operation 2 weeks ago for oesophageal cancer and initially the doctors said everything was fine, they got all the cancer out. But now they've said the operation "has failed" and I have no idea what this means?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate your current concern. I am not sure exactly what the doctors mean by failed. It could be that the original surgery has not achieved what they had hoped to. The doctors may have further results that indicate that not all of the cancer was removed. This may mean that further treatment such as chemotherapy may now be necessary. I don't know for sure, it might be a possibility.

Hopefully, you will all be able to find out more soon from the surgical team.

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
