Liver Resection

Hello I had a liver resection on 10th December, everything went great, pain afterwards was bareable but since 14th February I’ve had an awful stinging pain but only when I get up to move, been on oxycodone but it doesn’t hide the pain I’m now on gabapentin but also isn’t helping, I’m stuck in the house due to the pain, the hospital that did the operation will now see me 13th May, we go to America on 3rd April and we’ve had to get a wheelchair for me due to the pain.

4th march I was admitted into hospital for having a right side lung infection with small amount of fluid on my lungs, was treated with antibiotics and waiting for an appointment for another X-ray to check the infection.

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

Unfortunately, superficial nerve endings can be damaged after liver surgery. These can take a long time to recover, and cause nerve pain and inflammation.

Gabapentin does help with nerve pain but often needs careful tweaking to find the right dose that helps. You might benefit from a referral to a hospital pain clinic. Your specialist or GP can refer you. They can assess you, and may be able to do a nerve block in the area that is painful. You may also find having a physiotherapy referral and assessment helpful, as stretching muscles gently may help reduce tightness and nerve spasm. Some physiotherapists have experience in TENS machines that can be applied via pads to the skin for short periods to disrupt the pain messaging.

    I hope this reply helps,

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
