Precancerous cervical cells and smear test

Can I just ask a question, I had pre cancerous cells lasered about 7 years ago, when they got the results after I was told they had removed them with clear margins and I was fine to go back to normal routine smears, I’m just sitting here out of the blue worrying because at my last smear I was told I was negative for Hpv virus and that the cells haven’t been tested becoasebi don’t have Hpv and that this is the new way of testing - but I’m just thinking if I have had cells before because I HAD the virus how do they know the cells haven’t come back just because I no longer have hpv

  • Hello Cazzy20 and thanks for your post.

The Human Papilloma virus (HPV) is responsible for causing changes to the cells in almost all cases. As your smear test was negative for the HPV virus there is no longer the necessity to check the cells. Usually your immunity gets on top of this virus which has what has probably happened in your case.

We have some information about cervical screening results on our website.

If any of this is not clear please do give the nurses a ring on the helpline.

The number to ring is freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
