Should I pursue a second referral?

Hi - I’m a 45yo, non-smoking man with no significant history.

I have had >5 weeks worth of pain on the left hand side only of my throat when swallowing (especially with cold liquids) as if a fishbone was stuck and also have the feeling of a lump in my throat for most of the time but especially after swallowing.

I’s swallowing and hawking more than usual and I have an on and off pain in my left ear which I can induce if I gargle. I have felt dizzy for the last week or so

I initially saw my GP who referred me on a suspected cancer pathway referral. I have since had an ENT appointment who checked for lumps, looked in my ear and did a nasoendoscopy.

She said she couldn’t find anything at all to explain the symptoms apart from a bit of post nasal drip and an incidental finding of a small cyst in my ear so sent me away to get some congestion relief but that was it.

My question is whether I should pursue the possibility of osephageal cancer as well or pursue an MRI to double check there’s a nothing sub-mucosa (she mentioned this but didn’t want to do the referral). I know I don’t have any key at risk factors but remain concerned that there’s no real explanation for the symptoms.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hello James 1979 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It must be incredibly frustrating to have these symptoms and not know the cause.

It is reassuring that you were checked and the ENT doctor did not notice anything too concerning.

I can only suggest that you go back to your GP or another GP in the practice to see if they have any further suggestions. If you haven't been referred by your ENT consultant for an MRI unfortunately I don't think your GP would be able to also organise this.

If you do want to have an MRI then you may have to be referred to a private doctor

The NHS has written some information on tips to help with congestion/catarrh

I am sorry that I haven't been more helpful.
