2 surgeries

I am 13 days post lumpectomy and 2 lymph nodes removed and now need a mastectomy in 3 weeks. I am worried about how I will recover after already having had surgery and now another so close. Will pain and recovery be worse? I have a 12 year old son and work full time. So worried.

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation, this must be very difficult.

Unfortunately, because everyone's recovery will be different it is difficult to say how you will be following the surgery.

I cannot say whether the recovery will be worse because of the previous surgery a lot will also depend on whether or not you are having reconstruction at the same time. If you are just having the breast removed you would generally expect to be discharged on the same day or the next day depending on your recovery.

You may have seen the information booklet on Breast Cancer Now called Your Operation Your Recovery.

There are many different types of pain relief and different types of strength of relief that can be given, and it can be trial and error getting it right.

It would be hoped to get you up and moving as soon as possible. There would be the same possible effects as the lumpectomy for example infection, swelling and bruising.

The best person to discuss this with would be your specialist breast nurse (CNS) who knows your situation.

If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline, we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards,

    Jemma
