Breast cancer diagnosis

Hi. I went to my Gp on Friday as I have 3 lumps in my boob. She is referring me as urgent to what she said “urgent breast cancer care unit”. She said if I don’t hear within 2 weeks go back. Obviously I am petrified. I keep telling myself that I’m not going to worry unless I need to but I’m struggling. I’ve been reading a lot of information on the cancer research page which I don’t know if that’s helping or not. I know you don’t have a crystal ball but roughly how long would someone be usually looking at for a diagnosis as it’s only been 2 days and it feels like forever?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I appreciate this is a worrying time for you but try and take things one step at a time for now. Try and avoid searching things on line until you have all the facts about your situation.

Breast lumps almost always warrant a suspected cancer referral but most women referred to a breast unit won't go on to get a diagnosis of cancer. There are many non cancerous breast conditions that can cause lumps such as cysts and fibroadenomas (fatty tissue) so these are possibilities too. There is more information about some of these on the Breast Cancer Now website.

As your doctor has said you should hear something in the next couple of weeks but if not do let them know so they can chase it up.

At the breast clinic they usually do a series of different tests to find out more. This usually includes an examination, some imaging test such as a mammogram and or ultrasound and if needed some biopsies ( tissue samples) for any unusual areas in the breast tissues. They can't always say on the day what is causing the lumps without the biopsy results which can take a week or 2 to come back.

I hope this helps and that you know more very soon.

    Take care

    Naomi
