Ovarian cancer spread to brain

Hi. My mum has stage 3 ovarian cancer, it’s unfortunately continued to spread and after ending up in hospital again this week they’ve found 2 lesions in her brain.
I’ve seen on her discharge paper that there is high risk of her developing hydrocephalus.

she signed a dnr whilst in hospital. She won’t ask how long she has but I’m struggling and feel like I need to prepare myself. I know you can’t give a definite on these things but she’s come home with a care package and I just get the feeling she’s had enough and it won’t be long.

i don’t really know what I’m asking but are my suspicions that she is not going to be with us long correct?

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation, this must be difficult for all the family.

Times like this can be very unsettling but it is only the doctors and nurses directly involved in your mum's care who can give more information about the short or longer term and what to expect.

Whilst your mum doesn't want to ask about time frames if she is willing to give her permission for you to speak to the doctor without her being present, this can be arranged.

As I say it will be very much the nurses and doctors who are coming in and out of her home to provide care that will be in a position to comment about this.

There are of course some things that tend to happen as people come towards the end. Often than not, there can be a gradual deterioration where patients are less mobile to the point of being bed bound. They may have less appetite and not really drink or eat that much. Patients can spend more time sleeping than awake and so on. These are all signs that they may be in the last days or weeks.

I hope you can get a better understanding of this soon so you can plan and prepare ahead.

Please get back in touch if you need to. We also have the helpline if you prefer to talk over the phone, our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care
