Cervical biopsy

Hi,

I’m Mary, 61 years old and because I’ve bled several times over the past couple of months I had several procedures performed on Friday. One of the procedures was a cervical biopsy. I wasn’t offered any local anaesthetic even though the consultant said he normally does use local anaesthetic on his patients. The pain was excruciating and I was so traumatised by it that I can only remember apologising to the nurse about blood being everywhere and can’t recall the conversation afterwards which I had with the consultant. All I can remember is him saying I reminded him of Stacey from Gavin & Stacey and him showing no empathy whatsoever saying he’d seen hundreds of periods.

Today is the sixth day since the procedure and I’m still in great discomfort and moderate abdominal pain. Is this normal and how long will it last?

Thanking you in anticipation,

Mary

  • Hello Mary and thanks for posting

I'm sorry you had such a painful and traumatic experience when you attended the hospital. You may wish to express your concerns to the clinic about what you went through so that they can look into this for you.

As for your pain and discomfort, some cramping and soreness is expected .after a cervical biopsy, and it can last for a couple of weeks. Taking a mild painkiller such as paracetamol should help. If you feel the pain is getting worse, or if you are experiencing heavy bleeding, or a vaginal discharge, it's a good idea to contact your GP or the hospital, as it could be a sign of infection.

I hope you start to feel better soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
