Dad has Cancer on vertebrae and lymph nodes

My dad got radiotherapy treatment and hormone injections for prostate cancer last year which was a success however at his routine check up they've discovered he now has it on his vertebrae at the top of his back/bottom of his neck and also on his lymph nodes in his groin, today after discussing with his consultant they've decided to go ahead with SBRT.......I'm worried sick but putting on a brave face for his sake because he doesn't like a fuss,I know everyone reacts differently to treatment but what should I prepare myself for during my dads treatment please?

  • Hello and thanks for posting
I'm sorry to read about your dad's situation. This must be a very difficult time for you both.
Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) is a more precise and intense form of radiotherapy, it is usually given over fewer sessions than standard radiotherapy. The risk of damage to normal surrounding tissues is low. Therefore the side effects may be less from the radiotherapy he had before.
People often ask what more can they do to support someone going through cancer treatment. But talking and listening and being there when you can are what most people find useful.
Your dad may feel very tired during and after his treatment. Sometimes it can be better to ask him what he would find most helpful for you to do for him. For example, he may be really appreciative you doing some practical things for her such as doing some light housework, or getting shopping in, or preparing meals for him or even taking him to and from hospital appointments when you can. You can offer to do one or two of these things but do bear in mind we can only do what someone allows us to do.
It's not easy looking after a close family member and it's important that you look after yourselfSome people find talking things through with family and friends can sometimes help.
I hope this will be of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
    Kind regards,
    Celene
