Needing a little reassurance

For the last 2years my breasts have seemed very sensitive to temperature change…often looking purple when it’s cold and red when it’s warm. I want to know if inflammatory breast cancer can present with such symptoms over this extended period of time? Iv got no lumps, no inverted nipples, no dimpling, no orange peel skin, no pain, no rash…just breasts that seem to change colour.

  • I am on tamoxifen for breast cancer treated and resolved 5 years ago. Iv noticed the colour change previously and didn’t think anything of it till I read something on inflammatory breast cancer and now I’m simply wanting to know if inflammatory breast cancer can present with such a simple symptom over such an extended period of time. Probably just my anxiety causing my brain to overthink this all.

  • Hello LaurenJennifer and thanks for your post,

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare condition that usually develops very quickly. I am sure over a two year period you would have noticed other symptoms other then the change in temperature.

If you are worried about your breasts do make an appointment with your GP where they can perform a breast examination and hopefully put your mind at rest. Breast tissue is very sensitive and it does change throughout a woman's life time due to hormonal changes.

Breast Cancer Now have produced some information about how to examine your breasts.

    I hope this helps.

If you would like to chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses you can always give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,
