“Suspicious” Lump

Hi,

I had a core needle biopsy taken last Saturday. I had previously been seen in the breast unit for cysts which were aspirated in December. The “cyst” appeared back within days so I returned on a 2WW pathway to be checked again. The consultant seemed fairly confident it was a recurrence of the cyst, and as I’d had mammograms taken in December, sent me straight to ultrasound. The Dr performing the USS was incredibly thorough which concerned me somewhat as I just thought I would be in and out after another aspiration. She requested 6 more mammograms to be taken and following this I had the core biopsy with clips inserted. One week on, I’m having trouble sleeping, walking is painful, stretching my arm hurts and I’m still very bruised. My follow up letter has given me a R4 U4 prognosis, which I’m guessing is fairly standard given the situation? My results are due following an MDT next Monday. I guess I’m asking how worried should I be? It all feels a bit surreal and I keep having to give myself a bit of a talking to!

  • Hello, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the worry it is causing you.

While I know it was a worrying experience, it was good that the person doing your ultrasound was so thorough. I am sorry to hear about the pain and bruising you have. Hopefully, over a few days, this will lessen and get better.

But I am afraid that you are going to have to wait for your next appointment to see if anything is the matter. Waiting is never easy, so try and do your best to keep your mind off this.

In the meantime you are welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Caroline

  • Hi, thank you for replying. I’m sorry I haven’t replied sooner, but went into denial. I received my diagnosis yesterday, stage 3A cancer that has spread to one lymph node. It’s a fast growing type that involves Her2, but I haven’t really understood that part!
Now awaiting a CT scan which obviously can’t come soon enough as I’ve convinced myself that it’s already spread everywhere. Every ache and pain is causing me to panic. Chemo will follow on from the results of the scan, with surgery and radiotherapy after that. Needless to say I’m reeling a bit. From a cyst in December to a 75mm mass in March, it’s all come as a huge shock.

  • Thank you Catherine. Have spoken to the breast care nurse today, and I now understand the type, and the grade. She was very reassuring. My scan is next week so at least I have the start date to focus on now.

Thank you all for everything you do. The support out there really is second to none.
