Surgery refusal

Just over two years ago, my mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer. She had a colonoscopy and a 3mm tumour was found on one of her polyps. After a meeting with the oncologist it was determined that mum would need to have a lung function test to test her lung capacity for surgery. After this it was decided that her lungs were not strong enough for surgery and that she could potentially not survive the surgery or that her lungs would be severely damaged and be on a respirator for the rest of her days. She was referred to macmillan whose main responsibility was to check in with her every few weeks to see how she was and if there were any changes. Since then my mum has had a few doctors appointments for unrelated issues but has been told on numerous occasions that her lungs are ok, despite the fact she’s an ex smoker. My question is, can my mum insist on a second opinion and a follow up colonoscopy to see if the tumour has spread t any other parts. If anybody can help please be specific in your answer as I believe that will help me more in this situation.

Thank you for reading.

  • 3 mm is very small area, I have been looking at YouTube videos by dr Barbara o neill on how to kill cancer cells by changing the environment in the body that feeds them. Worth watching.

  • And the second opinion?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both and I can appreciate you wanting to explore her options.

Some people like to ask for a second opinion with another oncology ( cancer) team as they want to feel that they have left no stone unturned, especially if there are doubts about a previous diagnosis and treatment plan. Although, it's not an automatic right under the NHS to get a second opinion, most doctors will not refuse a request for one. Your mother could ask her GP or current specialist to refer her.

I hope this is of use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you Celene. My thinking is that it is 2025 and just one opinion whilst valid is not 100% guaranteed to be right. I do have the number for the colorectal team. Should I contact them directly or go through the gp with the hope of a more accelerated response?

  • Hello and thanks for your further post.

As you have the number of the colorectal team you can contact them and see what their advice is.

Alternatively, you can ask the GP for a second opinion.

    Regards,

    Celene
